The South Carolina National Guard has played a significant role in Afghanistan since Operation Enduring Freedom began in late 2001. From the mountains to the urban areas, South Carolina soldiers have performed a variety of vital tasks including: training the Afghan Uniform Police, training the Afghan National Army, providing Heavy Aviation Lift assets, and clearing roads of dangerous roadside bombs. The Guard has also contributed communications and medical support, as well as participated in various agricultural missions and construction projects.
Over 5,200 South Carolina National Guard soldiers have been deployed in support of operations in Afghanistan, and 10 have given their lives. South Carolina National Guard soldiers are still deployed in the region, and they continue to serve and accomplish every mission with pride and professionalism.
